Las Vegas, NV -- (Sports Network) - Mike Clausen threw for 203 yards and two touchdowns to lead the UNLV Rebels to a 27-20 victory over the New Mexico Lobos in a Mountain West Conference showdown at Sam Boyd Stadium. Ryan Wolfe hauled in seven receptions for UNLV (4-6, 1-5 MWC), finishing the game with 100 yards. Rodney Ferguson rushed for 121 yards and one touchdown for New Mexico (4-7, 2-5), but Brad Gruner threw for just 128 yards on 11-of-25 passing.
The Lobos opened the scoring with a 40-yard touchdown run by Bryant Johnson midway through the first quarter. The Rebels finally got on the scoreboard late in the first frame with a 52- yard field goal by Ben Jaekle. A five-yard touchdown run by Ferguson early in the second stanza pushed the Lobos' lead to 14-3. UNLV added another field goal midway through the second quarter, as Kyle Watson nailed a 29-yard kick for the Rebels. In the final seconds of the first half Clausen connected with Rodelin Anthony for a 10-yard scoring strike, cutting the Rebels deficit to 14-13 as the two teams entered the break. New Mexico extended its lead to 17-13 early in the third frame when James Aho booted a 30-yard field goal. The Rebels regained the lead later in the quarter when Clausen hit Frank Summers with a four-yard touchdown pass. Less than two minutes into the fourth quarter Anthony picked up a blocked punt and returned the ball for an 11-yard score, pushing UNLV's lead to 27-17. Aho nailed a 32-yard field goal for New Mexico midway through the final stanza, but the Lobos were unable to come any closer, falling to UNLV by a seven-point margin.
