Red-Hot Hurlers Highlight Royals-Rockies Tilt

(Sports Network) - Zack Greinke and Jorge De La Rosa have both been outstanding over their last two starts. That duo will square off tonight, when the Kansas City Royals and Colorado Rockies continue a three-game interleague series at Kauffman Stadium.

Kansas City's Greinke is 1-0 over his last two starts, allowing just a single run in that span. He defeated St. Louis on Thursday, giving up just a solo homer in seven innings while striking out seven. That came after he held Arizona scoreless over seven frames in a no-decision on June 13, an outing in which he also walked seven.

The right-hander has made his last four starts on the road and is 2-0 with a 2.25 earned run average in five home starts this season. Overall, Greinke is 6-4 with a 3.33 ERA on the season and makes his first career start against Colorado. He has faced the Rockies once in relief, holding the club hitless over 1 1/3 frames.

De La Rosa has been a big surprise since returning from a stint in the bullpen. During a June 14 outing against the White Sox, the lefty allowed just a hit and one walk over five shutout innings, while striking out what was then a career-high eight in a no-decision.

He then started against Cleveland on Thursday and fanned 10 batters over six frames in a victory. De La Rosa gave up three runs on four hits in the outing, in which he became the first Colorado hurler to strikeout 10 or more batters in six innings or fewer.

The left-hander is 2-3 with a 6.52 ERA in 10 games, including seven starts, and faces his former club for the first time tonight. De La Rosa pitched with the Royals from parts of 2006 through last year until being dealt to the Rockies earlier this year. He went 11-16 with a 5.64 ERA in 36 games (33 starts) with Kansas City.

The Royals drew first blood in this series, getting home runs from Mark Teahen, Jose Guillen and Ross Gload in an 8-4 victory last night. Teahen smacked a three-run homer in the first inning to set the early tone.

Alex Gordon scored twice for the Royals, who have won three straight and eight of nine. Brian Bannister (7-6) won his third straight decision after he gave up three unearned runs on three hits with six walks and five strikeouts in seven innings.

Kansas City has won eight of its last nine games against the National League and is an major league-best 10-3 in interleague play this year. Colorado, meanwhile, fell to 7-3 versus the AL this season.

Matt Holliday hit a two-run homer and scored twice for the Rockies, who have dropped three of their last four. Jeff Francis (3-7) was tagged with the loss after giving up seven runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Colorado's Jeff Baker, named the NL Player of the Week on Monday, went 1-for-5 on Monday to stretch his career-best hitting streak to nine games. He is batting .351 (13-37) with 12 runs scored, four homers and eight RBI during his stretch

Also, Clint Barmes returned for Colorado in last night's game after missing the last 28 tests with a sprained right knee. He went 1-for-4 with a run scored and is hitting .341 through 40 games this season.

The Royals and Rockies are meeting in Kansas City for the first time after the Rockies went 5-4 versus Colorado over three series held at Coors Field. The Royals did take two of three versus the Rockies in Colorado last year.
