Carmelo Arrested On Suspicion Of DUI

Nuggets Star Failed Sobriety Tests, Police Say

Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony was arrested early Monday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence, hours after his worst game of the season.

The Nuggets forward was pulled over in his silver Mercedes at about 4 a.m., for weaving and for driving with his high-beams on, Denver police said. He was alone and driving on southbound Interstate 25 near 20th Street.

There was no accident and no one was hurt. Anthony, 23, failed a series of sobriety tests, and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, said police Detective Sharon Hahn.

He was transported to Denver Police headquarters where he was processed and then released to a sober responsible party, Hahn said.

Denver police don't jail DUI suspects and Anthony was no exception, she said.

Anthony consented by submitting to a blood test, the results of which will not be known for two weeks, said his attorney.

"He regrets putting himself in this situation," his attorney Dan Recht said in a news release. "Carmelo apologizes to his fans, the Denver community, his teammates and the Denver Nuggets organization for the distraction this is causing them."

As he awaits the results of his blood test, Anthony said he will try to stay focused on his family and on his team.

Anthony was released and issued a summons to appear in court on May 14.

The arrest occurred about seven hours after the Nuggets beat the Houston Rockets at the Pepsi Center, getting them one step closer to the playoffs. If the Nuggets win Wednesday against the Memphis Grizzlies or the Golden State Warriors lose Monday night against Phoenix, then the Nuggets will clinch the final berth in the NBA Western Conference playoffs.

The Nuggets said they are aware of the situation but declined comment.

"We are aware of the situation involving Carmelo Anthony. We are currently gathering information and we will have no further comment at this time," said Denver Nuggets Vice President of Basketball Operations Mark Warkentien.

Even though the Nuggets beat Houston 111-94 on Sunday, it was Anthony's worst outing of the season. He was held to 11 points on 3-of-14 shooting against a Rockets team that was missing defensive specialist Shane Battier.

Anthony still managed to extend his NBA-best streak of double-digit games to 206.

On Saturday, he committed a flagrant foul against Utah's Deron Williams that changed he course of a close game, and the Jazz ran away with a 124-97 win.

The Nuggets did not practice on Monday and Anthony wasn't available for comment. He's expected back on the court at practice on Tuesday.

Despite his poor game Sunday, Anthony has had another stellar season. He was named an All-Star starter for the first time alongside teammate Allen Iverson, and he's fourth in the NBA in scoring (25.8) and is averaging a career-best 7.4 rebounds.

Last season, he was involved in a brawl at Madison Square Garden. After J.R. Smith was collared on his way to a breakaway bucket in the closing minutes of a rout, Anthony, then the league's leading scorer, dropped the New York Knicks' Mardy Collins with a punch that cost him a 15-game suspension.

In February, Anthony was ticketed in Arapahoe County for driving 25 mph over the posted speed limit. A hearing is set for next month in that speeding case.
