BCS Championship: No. 2 LSU 38, No. 1 Ohio State 24
No. 2 LSU danced, dodged and darted its way into the end zone Monday night, turning the BCS national championship game into a horrible replay for No. 1 Ohio State. It was over early, with Matt Flynn throwing four touchdown passes in a 38-24 win. Playing at their home-away-from-home in the Big Easy, LSU (12-2) became the first two-loss team to play for the title. Shouts of "SEC! SEC!" bounced around the Superdome as the Tigers won their second BCS crown in five seasons. They are the first school to win a second title since BCS rankings began with the 1998 season. And in a season of surprises, this was hardly an upset: Ohio State once again fell apart in college football's biggest game. A year after the Buckeyes were routed by Tim Tebow and Florida 41-14 in the Arizona desert, they barely did better.
Jacob Hester bulled for a short touchdown, Early Doucet wiggled loose for a touchdown and All-American Glenn Dorsey led a unit that outplayed the top-ranked defense in the nation. Ohio State (11-2) had little to celebrate after Chris "Beanie" Wells broke loose for a 65-yard TD run on the fourth play of the game. Yet while LSU got to hoist the $30,000 crystal trophy, certainly many fans around the country were peering into their crystal balls, wondering if someone else was worthy of the title. Southern California, Georgia, West Virginia, Kansas and Missouri all put on impressive shows in bowl games, and will be among the favorites in 2008. The final Associated Press poll was to be released early Tuesday.
GMAC Bowl: Tulsa 63, Bowling Green 7
Paul Smith and the nation's top-rated offense made history in the GMAC Bowl. Smith had his NCAA-record 14th consecutive 300-yard passing game and Tulsa converted four fumble recoveries into first-half touchdowns on the way to a 63-7 romp over Bowling Green. With all that help, the Golden Hurricane ran up a 35-0 halftime lead and capped coach Todd Graham's first season by reaching 10 wins for the first time since 1991. Tulsa finished 10-4. Smith passed for 312 yards and five touchdowns. He broke the record of 13 300-yard efforts in a row he shared with BYU's Ty Detmer, whose streak stretched over the 1989 and 1990 seasons.Smith also became only the seventh Division I player to reach the 5,000-yard mark in a season.International Bowl: Rutgers 52, Ball State 30
Ray Rice had four touchdowns and 280 yards, including a career-long 90-yard score to lift the Scarlet Knights to a 52-30 win in the International Bowl. Rutgers (8-5) hadn't won a bowl game before last year. Now the program has won two in a row, following a 37-10 win over Kansas State in the 2006 Texas Bowl with another blowout north of the border. Ball State (7-6), meanwhile, is still waiting for its first bowl win in four tries. Rice, whose 25 touchdowns this season are a school record, has yet to announce whether he'll skip his senior season and enter the NFL draft. Players who choose to declare for the draft must do so by Jan. 15.Orange Bowl: No. 8 Kansas 24, No. 5 Virginia Tech 21
While their high-powered offense was stymied most of the night, the Kansas Jayhawks came up with three interceptions and beat Virginia Tech 24-21 in the Orange Bowl to cap one of the finest seasons in school history. The turnovers led to 17 Kansas points, including Aqib Talib's 60-yard return for the game's first score. He was chosen the game's most valuable player. No. 8 Kansas (12-1), perhaps the biggest surprise in college football this season, won in its first Bowl Championship Series game to set a team record for victories. A year ago the Jayhawks went 6-6. The No. 5 Hokies (11-3) lost their fourth consecutive BCS game. It was a bittersweet finish for the Hokies, who revived campus spirits this season following the April 16 massacre that left 32 students and professors dead. The Jayhawks played in their first major bowl since the 1969 Orange Bowl, and they made a big splash at the start, racing to a 17-0 lead after 23 minutes.Fiesta Bowl: No. 11 West Virginia 48, No. 3 Oklahoma 28
The West Virginia Mountaineers didn't need coach Rich Rodriguez. They had Pat White, and their elusive quarterback led them to a surprising 48-28 romp over No. 3 Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. White ran for 150 yards and threw for 176 and two touchdowns for the 11th-ranked Mountaineers, who rushed for 349 yards, most allowed by Oklahoma in a bowl game. Since arriving in the desert last week, the Mountaineers (11-2) said they had bonded behind interim coach Bill Stewart, who took over when Rodriguez bolted for Michigan in mid-December. And they vowed to rebound from a 13-9 loss to Pitt that knocked them out of the Bowl Championship Series title game. The Mountaineers were right on both counts, turning in an emotional effort and overcoming the loss of star tailback Steve Slaton to a first-quarter leg injury. Noel Devine replaced Slaton and ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns -- a 17-yarder and a 65-yarder that clinched the game in the fourth quarter. The Mountaineers became the first of six teams to win under an interim coach in this bowl season. They improved to 2-0 in the Bowl Championship Series. Oklahoma (11-3) endured another disappointment on the same field where the Sooners lost a classic Fiesta Bowl to Boise State one year ago. The Sooners have dropped four straight BCS games.Sugar Bowl: No. 4 Georgia 41, No. 10 Hawaii 10
The Georgia Bulldogs dominated the defensive and offensive side of the ball in the Sugar Bowl against the University of Hawaii Warriors in New Orleans on Tuesday night in front of a national audience. The University of Georgia's running game pushed through the Hawaii defense for three touchdowns. Freshman sensation Knowshon Moreno scored the touchdowns while sharing carries with senior Thomas Brown. It appeared the Warriors couldn't stop the Bulldogs' run game.Warrior quarterback Colt Brennan was connecting with his targets, but they did not get many yards after the catch as they normally did throughout the season.Georgia's defense pressured Brennan constantly. The defense sacked him seven times and knocked him down more than eight times.Brennan was also picked off three times and fumbled when he was hit in the backfield.Georgia's defense held Hawaii, the nation's highest-scoring offense, to season lows in scoring and yardage and forced six turnovers.UGA defensive end Marcus Howard earned the Most Valuable Player award for the game. Howard had three sacks and recovered a fumble. The team appeared poised to score a touchdown in the first quarter, but a personal foul on wide receiver Jason Rivers put the Warriors back and the team had to settle for a field goal. The team's only touchdown happened in the fourth quarter when backup Tyler Graunke connected with Ryan Grice-Mullen on a 16-yard score. Graunke entered the game after Brennan was shaken up when he was hit in the backfield.Penalties hurt the Warriors. The team was assessed 11 penalties for 90 yards. The loss stings more than just for the game itself. Brennan discussed needing to win the game to gain respect. Instead the team faces critics who will likely question their weak schedule.Rose Bowl: No. 6 USC 49, No. 13 Illinois 17
Sixth-ranked Southern Cal dominated on both ends of the ball while cruising to a 49-17 win over No. 13 Illinois in the Rose Bowl. Lawrence Jackson and Rey Maualuga set the tone on defense while the Trojans were allowing just 79 total yards in building a 21-3 lead. Jackson sacked Illinois quarterback Juice Williams on the game's third play, and Maualuga's first-quarter interception set up a touchdown. Maualuga also had three sacks in the second period, matching his regular-season total. Illini had no answer for quarterback John David Booty or the USC running game. Booty passed for 255 yards and three touchdowns as the Trojans ended the year 11-2. Joe McKnight ran for 125 yards and a touchdown, and Stafon Johnson added 105 yards on nine carries. Rashard Mendenhall was the Illini's offensive star, running for a 79-yard touchdown and finishing with 156 yards on the ground. Williams threw for 242 yards, but had no touchdowns and two interceptions for the 9-4 Illini.Capital One Bowl: Michigan 41, No. 9 Florida
Lloyd Carr went out a winner. Chad Henne threw for 373 yards and three touchdowns, Mike Hart ran for 129 yards and two scores and the Wolverines upset No. 9 Florida 41-35 in the Capital One Bowl to win their first bowl game since 2003. This one was special. Michigan's senior class won its first bowl game in four tries and Carr ended his coaching career on a high note. Henne, Adrian Arrington and Mario Manningham torched Florida's secondary all game. Arrington caught nine passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns, and Manningham added five catches for 78 yards and a score. The Gators kept it close thanks to four turnovers and plenty of big plays by Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow and speedster Percy Harvin. Florida failed to convert a fourth-down play at its 25-yard line, and K.C. Lopata's 41-yard field goal put Michigan ahead 41-35 with 2:21 remaining.Gator Bowl: Texas Tech 31, No. 21 Virginia 28
Alex Trlica kicked a 41-yard field goal with seven seconds left to give Texas Tech a 31-28 come-from-behind victory over No. 21 Virginia in a wild Gator Bowl. Tech overcame several mental errors, including pivotal penalties and a fumble, to come back from a 28-14 fourth quarter deficit. Its aggressive pass offense couldn't score much for three quarters, but Graham Harrell still managed to rack up several Gator Bowl records. He completed 44 of 69 passes for 407 yards, all records, plus three TDs. In the final period, the Red Raiders finally found the end zone as they were accustomed to all year. Twice, actually, and Trlica's field goal did the rest. The Red Raiders overcame a tremendous effort by Virginia tailback Mikell Simpson, who ran for 170 yards on 20 carries -- including a NCAA bowl-record 96-yard TD run.Outback Bowl: No. 16 Tennessee 21, No. 18 Wisconsin 17
Erik Ainge ensured No. 16 Tennessee wouldn't leave the Outback Bowl with another disappointing loss. Capping a rollercoaster career, the Volunteers' star threw for 265 yards and two touchdowns for a 21-17 win. Tennessee stopped No. 18 Wisconsin from joining Michigan as the only Big Ten teams to beat Southeastern Conference opponents in bowl games three consecutive seasons. A month after having an interception returned for the winning score in a 21-14 loss to LSU in the SEC championship game, Ainge completed 25 of 43 passes without a turnover. He won MVP honors and helped the Vols (10-4) erase unpleasant memories of a 10-point loss to Penn State in last year's Outback game. Antonio Wardlow sealed Tennessee's first 10-win season since 2004, when he intercepted Tyler Donovan's deep throw intended for Paul Hubbard in the end zone in the final minute.Cotton Bowl: Missouri 38, Arkansas 7
Missouri routed Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 1.Led by Heisman Trophy finalist Chase Daniel, the Tigers tallied 459 yards of offense and five touchdowns.Missouri was led by Tony Temple, who rushed for 281 yards and four touchdowns.Arkansas running back Darren McFadden tallied 105 yards and a touchdown.Chick-Fil-A Bowl: Auburn 23 Clemson 20, OT
Freshman quarterback Kodi Burns threw for a touchdown and scored on a 7-yard run in overtime to lead Auburn to a 23-20 victory over Clemson in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. After Mark Buchholz kicked a 25-yard field goal on Clemson's opening possession of overtime, Burns scored on a spinning run on a third-and-3 play for the game-winner. Auburn's starting quarterback, Brandon Cox, ran for a first down on a fourth-and-1 play from the 16 to keep Auburn's overtime possession alive. Burns threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Mario Fannin for his only completion of the game and had 13 carries for 69 yards, including the winning run. Cullen Harper was only 12-for-29 passing for 91 yards as Clemson was held to 11 first downs and 276 yards in regulation. Both teams finished 9-4. Clemson was denied its first 10-win season since 1990.Sun Bowl: Oregon 56, South Florida 21
Jonathan Stewart set a Sun Bowl record with a career-high 253 yards rushing and Justin Roper threw four touchdown passes in his first start as Oregon beat South Florida 56-21 on Monday. The Ducks (9-4) scored 28 straight points in the third quarter to snap a four-game postseason losing streak, their first bowl win since beating Colorado 38-16 in the Fiesta Bowl after the 2001 season. The Ducks won for the first time since losing quarterback Dennis Dixon to a knee injury in November, snapping a three-game losing streak. Oregon won handily despite setting a Sun Bowl record with 138 penalty yards.Insight Bowl: Oklahoma State 49, Indiana 33
Zac Robinson threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more scores in leading Oklahoma State to a 49-33 Insight Bowl victory over Indiana. Robinson completed 24 of 34 passes for 302 yards. He also threw an interception. Dantrell Savage ran for 100 yards and a touchdown for the 7-6 Cowboys, who matched their season-high point total. The loss capped an emotional year for the 7-6 Hoosiers. Their coach, Terry Hoeppner, died of complications from a brain tumor in June.Kellen Lewis passed for 204 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 83 yards and another touchdown for the Hoosiers in their first postseason appearance since 1993.Music City Bowl: Kentucky 35, Florida State 28
Andre Woodson threw four TD passes against a depleted Florida State defense and Kentucky won its second straight Music City Bowl by beating the Seminoles 35-28. It marked the first bowl loss in December in the long career of Florida State coach Bobby Bowden. Kentucky won back-to-back bowls for the first time since 1951 and 1952. Florida State was playing three dozen players short due to injuries and suspensions stemming from an academic cheating scandal. Woodson capitalized on the missing depth and finished the season with 40 touchdown passes, breaking Tim Couch's school-record 37 set in 1998. It was the 19th consecutive game with at least 200 passing yards and a scoring pass for Woodson, a senior who figures to be among the first quarterbacks taken in the NFL draft.Armed Forces Bowl: California 42, Air Force 36
California came roaring back from a three-touchdown deficit to beat Air Force 42-36 in the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas.California was ranked No. 2 in the nation back in October before losing six of seven games. The Golden Bears finish the season with a record of 7-6. The final mark for Air Force, which blew a 21-0 lead, is 9-4.Humanitarian Bowl: Fresno State 40, Georgia Tech 28
Clifton Smith rushed for 152 yards and two touchdowns to help Fresno State to a 40-28 victory over Georgia Tech in the Humanitarian Bowl. Tom Brandstater threw for a score and ran for another for a Fresno State offense that was surprisingly unstoppable against a Yellow Jackets defense that was among the best in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Bulldogs' offensive line kept Brandstater on his feet. Even when Tech got a little heat on the junior, he showed the ability to escape the pocket and keep plays alive. After punting on its opening possession, the Bulldogs (9-4) scored on six straight drives, taking a 34-14 lead midway through the third quarter. That's when Brandstater used an escort from tight end Bear Pascoe for a 24-yard touchdown run. Brandstater finished with 285 yards passing and the Bulldogs had 572 yards, the most allowed this season by the Yellow Jackets.Independence Bowl: Alabama 30, Colorado 24
John Parker Wilson completed 13 of his first 15 passes for 185 yards and three touchdowns and Alabama raced to a four-touchdown lead and held off Colorado 30-24 in the Independence Bowl. Alabama stopped a four-game losing streak and finished 7-6, avoiding consecutive losing seasons for the first time in 50 years. Colorado wound up 6-7, under .500 for the second straight year, but vastly improved from a 2-10 mark in 2006. Alabama amassed 170 yards in the first quarter and had 285 by halftime. Wilson had scoring passes of 15 yards to Keith Brown, 34 yards to Matt Caddell and 31 yards to Nikita Stover.Alamo Bowl: Penn State 24, Texas A&M 17
Evan Royster broke a tie with a 38-yard touchdown run and Penn State erased an early 14-point deficit to beat Texas A&M 24-17 at the Alamo Bowl. That made legendary Penn State coach Joe Paterno a winner in his 500th game as coach. Paterno, college football's leader with 34 bowl appearances, led the Nittany Lions in a thriller that brought him his record 23rd postseason win. Texas A&M's Stephen McGee led a 15-play drive to the Penn State 2-yard line before the drive ended on fourth-and-goal after slipping on an option play with about eight minutes left. The Nittany Lions secured their third straight bowl victory and spoiled Gary Darnell's one-game stint as Aggies interim head coach. Darnell took over when Dennis Franchione resigned. Texas A&M has hired Mike Sherman, currently offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans, to take over as head coach in 2008.Meineke Car Care Bowl: Wake Forest 24, Connecticut 10
Wake Forest rallied from a 10-0 deficit to beat Connecticut in the Meineke Car Care Bowl 24-10.Riley Skinner threw for 268 yards and one touchdown as the Demon Deacons completed a 9-4 season.UConn's Tyler Lorenzen was limited to 98 yards passing and was sacked twice. The Huskies finish the year 9-4.Liberty Bowl: Mississippi State 10, Central Florida 3
Sylvester Croom and Mississippi State capped a turnaround season built on defense with one of their stingiest efforts. Anthony Dixon scored the only touchdown on a 1-yard run with 1:54 left and the Bulldogs beat Central Florida 10-3 in the Liberty Bowl. The Bulldogs held the Knights to 219 yards and forced four turnovers. Mississippi State kept Central Florida's Kevin Smith from breaking the single-season rushing record. The junior finished 61 yards shy of Barry Sanders' single-season record of 2,628 yards set for Oklahoma State in 1988. Dixon finished with 66 yards and won the game with a 1-yard dive after Kyle Israel threw his third interception. It was the lowest scoring Liberty Bowl since Penn State beat Tulane 9-6 in 1979. Mississippi State finished the year 8-5 while UCF ended up 10-4.Champs Sports Bowl: No. 14 Boston College 24, Michigan State 21
Matt Ryan threw three touchdown passes, two to Rich Gunnell, and the Eagles extended the nation's longest bowl winning streak to eight with a 24-21 victory over Michigan State in the Champs Sports Bowl. Boston College (11-3) won 11 games for the first time since 1940. Ryan finished 22-of-47 for 249 yards, but he also had an interception and a costly fumble. Gunnell had six catches for 138 yards, including TD receptions of 29 and 68 yards. Both catches came against Michigan State freshman Chris Rucker, who was playing for the first time since having three medical procedures in the last two months to correct a detached retina. BC All-America safety Jamie Silva had two interceptions and was the game's most valuable player. The Eagles sealed the win with their fourth interception of the game. Paul Anderson picked off Brian Hoyer's pass and returned it to the Michigan State 29 with 2:29 remaining. Hoyer finished with five turnovers -- four interceptions and a fumble -- for the Spartans (7-6).Texas Bowl: TCU 20, Houston 13
Justin Watts ran for the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter as TCU pulled out a 20-13 win over Houston in the Texas Bowl at Houston. The game was tied 10-10 until Watts wove through the defense for an 8-yard TD. The Cougars had a chance to tie it with less than 30 seconds remaining, but Case Keenum's pass sailed just beyond the fingertips of Jeron Harvey in the end zone. Keenum followed that with two straight incompletions to end the game. Andy Dalton ran for a touchdown as the Horned Frogs won a bowl game for the third straight year, the first time they've done that since 1939. Both teams end the year 8-5.Emerald Bowl: Oregon State 21, Maryland 14
Yvenson Bernard rushed for 177 yards and a touchdown in his final college game, and Oregon State grinded out a 21-14 victory over Maryland in a rain-soaked Emerald Bowl. James Rodgers rushed for 115 yards, caught an early TD pass and recovered Bernard's fumble for the second half's only score as the Beavers (9-4) won their fourth consecutive bowl game under coach Mike Riley and snapped Ralph Friedgen's three-game postseason winning streak at Maryland. Sean Canfield returned from a three-game absence to pass for 68 yards in relief of injured Lyle Moevao. But Canfield mostly did what Oregon State does best: Hand off to Bernard, who had 38 carries to finish as the second-leading rusher in school history, and Rodgers, the Beavers' multitalented freshman. Chris Turner passed for 205 yards and hit Isaiah Williams and Darrius Heyward-Bey with first-quarter TD passes, but the Terrapins (6-7) stalled in the second half of their fifth loss in seven games. The Beavers' rushing defense -- ranked second in the nation -- held the Terrapins to 2 yards on the ground in the first three quarters.Holiday Bowl: No. 17 Texas 52, No. 12 Arizona State 34
Now this was a Holiday Bowl to remember. Texas coach Mack Brown's stepson sure won't forget it, after he reached out to touch a live ball and drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that took away a big turnover. Colt McCoy won't either, because how often does a quarterback fumble four times and lead his team to a win? McCoy led the way as the 17th-ranked Longhorns beat the mistake-prone No. 12 Arizona State Sun Devils 52-34 in the first game between the schools and their successful coaches. McCoy threw for a touchdown, ran for another and fumbled into the end zone at the end of a 30-yard run, with tight end Jermichael Finley recovering for a score. The Longhorns recovered two other fumbles by McCoy, with ASU getting one. Jamaal Charles carried 27 times for 161 yards and two touchdowns for the Longhorns, who finished the season with a 10-3 record. Arizona State also wound up 10-3. The 86 points were the fourth-most in the Holiday Bowl's 30-year history.Motor City Bowl: Purdue 51, Central Michigan 48
Chris Summers kicked a 40-yard field goal as time expired in the Motor City Bowl, lifting Purdue to a 51-48 win over Central Michigan on Wednesday night. Curtis Painter threw for a school-record 546 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Boilermakers build three 21-point leads and set up the winning kick. Central Michigan's Dan LeFevour threw for 293 yards and four scores and ran for 114 yards and two TDs.Hawaii Bowl: East Carolina 41, No. 24 Boise State 38
Ben Hartman kicked a 34-yard field goal as time expired to give East Carolina a 41-38 win over No. 24 Boise State in the Hawaii Bowl. Chris Johnson set an NCAA bowl record with 408 all-purpose yards for the Pirates (8-5), who won their first postseason game since the 2000 Galleryfurniture.com Bowl. Johnson rushed for 223 yards, caught three passes for 32 yards and returned six kickoffs for 153 yards. But he committed a costly fumble late that almost sent it to overtime. With East Carolina trying to run out the clock near midfield, Marty Tadman scooped up Johnson's fumble and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown to tie it at 38 with 1:25 left. The Pirates took possession at their 39 with 1:16 left and drove to the Broncos 17 to set up Hartman's kick. The Pirates stormed the field in celebration and chased after Hartman, who dashed toward the locker room.Las Vegas Bowl: No. 19 BYU 17, UCLA 16
Eathyn Manumaleuna blocked a field goal as time expired to give No. 19 BYU a 17-16 victory over UCLA on Saturday night in the Las Vegas Bowl. Kai Forbath had kicked field goals of 52 and 50 yards to keep the Bruins in it, and UCLA drove almost the length of the field in the final two minutes to line up Forbath for the potential winner. But Manumaleuna got his hand on the kick and the Cougars got their first win over the Bruins since Steve Young was the quarterback.New Mexico Bowl: New Mexico 23, Nevada 0
New Mexico ended a 46-year bowl winless streak by blanking Nevada 23-0 in the New Mexico Bowl. Paul Baker ran for 167 yards in his first start. Donovan Porterie threw for career-high 354 yards and two touchdowns. The 9-4 Lobos ended a 46-year skid without a postseason victory and gave 10th-year coach Rocky Long his first bowl win in five tries. New Mexico's defense also delivered just the second shutout loss for Nevada's Hall of Fame coach, Chris Ault. The 6-7 Wolf Pack hadn't been blanked since 1980, a span of 329 games. It was New Mexico's first bowl victory since beating Western Michigan 28-12 in the 1961 Aviation Bowl at Dayton, Ohio. The Lobos also notched a nine-win season for just the fourth time in school history.PapaJohns.com Bowl: No. 20 Cincinnati 31, Southern Mississippi 21
Ben Mauk passed for 334 yards and four touchdowns and DeAngelo Smith intercepted three passes to lead 20th-ranked Cincinnati to a 31-21 win over Southern Mississippi in the PapaJohns.com Bowl. The victory gave the 10-3 Bearcats their second 10-win season and their first since 1951. Mauk completed 30 of 52 passes and overcame three interceptions to become only the third Bearcats player to have a 3,000-yard passing season. It was a nice finish for the former Wake Forest starter and for first-year Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly, but a difficult one for Southern Miss coach Jeff Bowers. It was his final game after 17 seasons at his alma mater, a stay that ranks behind only that of Joe Paterno, Bobby Bowden and Frank Beamer among current coaches. Bower was forced to resign after a disappointing regular season, leading to the hiring of Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Larry Fedora. The Golden Eagles finished 7-6.New Orleans Bowl: Florida Atlantic 44, Memphis 27
Howard Schnellenberger is still undefeated in bowl games and so is the fledgling Florida Atlantic college football program he built from nothing. Rusty Smith threw for 336 yards and a New Orleans Bowl record five touchdowns to lead Florida Atlantic to a 44-27 win over Memphis. It was the first bowl game for FAU, which has had a football team for only seven seasons and didn't join the NCAA's Bowl Subdivision until 2005. It certainly wasn't the highest-profile bowl victory for 73-year-old Schnellenberger, who led Miami to the 1983 national championship with an Orange Bowl triumph over Nebraska. He improved to 5-0 in bowl games over his 23 seasons as a head coach. He won the 1980 Peach Bowl with Miami and two bowl games with Louisville, the 1990 Fiesta Bowl and the 1993 Liberty Bowl. FAU players drenched their coach with a bucket of ice water in celebration. Then they carried him on their shoulders as the game ended.Poinsettia Bowl: Utah 35, Navy 32
Brian Johnson threw for one touchdown and ran for another, and Utah opened the bowl season with a wild 35-32 victory over the Navy Midshipmen in the Poinsettia Bowl. That's Utah's seventh straight bowl victory dating to 1999. The loss spoiled the head coaching debut of Navy's Ken Niumatalolo, who was promoted from assistant head coach and offensive line coach after Paul Johnson left for Georgia Tech. Running back Darrell Mack scored two touchdowns for 9-4 Utah, which won for the eighth time in nine games. The teams combined for 50 points in the second half. Navy pulled to 35-32 on a 58-yard touchdown pass to Zerbin Singleton with 57 seconds left. Singleton recovered the onside kick at the 42. But an interception by Joe Dale on the second play of the drive sealed the victory. Navy fell to 8-5.
Other Bowl Results
