Red Sox On Brink Of World Series Sweep

Boston Leads World Series 3-0

Boston's big bats made the trip from Fenway Park to Coors Field to give the Red Sox a 3-0 lead over the Colorado Rockies in the World Series.

The Red Sox scored six runs in the third to propel them to a 10-5 victory over Colorado in Game 3 in Denver.

Boston's first run was batted in by David Ortiz, who replaced Kevin Youkilis at first base since the American League club wouldn't be able to use a designated hitter in the National League ballpark. Ortiz's double scored Jacoby Ellsbury, who tallied four hits in the game.

Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia scored off of Mike Lowell's single to put Boston up 3-0. Pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka knocked in two runs on a single -- his first Major League hit -- and Julio Lugo made it a 6-0 game when Ellsbury doubled to center.

The Rockies rallied to a 6-5 deficit late in the game to put some pressure on the Red Sox.

Colorado took advantage of back-to-back walks from Matsuzaka in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two men on, Brad Hawpe hit a single off of Boston reliever Javier Lopez to score Todd Helton for the Rockies first run of the night. Yorvit Torrealba then singled to allow Garrett Atkins to score to make it a 6-2 game.

The Rockies rallied again in the seventh when Matt Holliday hit a three-run homer to bring Colorado within one of Boston's lead.

But Boston's offense came alive again in the eighth. Doubles by Ellsbury and Pedroia allowed the Red Sox to pull ahead 9-5. They scored their final run of the game in the top of the ninth when Lowell scored on a sacrifice fly by Jason Varitek.

Rockies starter Josh Fogg was pulled after 2 2/3 innings. He allowed six runs on 10 hits.

Matsuzaka gave up three hits and struck out five through 5 1/3 innings.

Game 4 will be Sunday night.
