ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals and general manager/senior vice president Walt Jocketty have parted ways, the club announced Wednesday.Assistant general manager John Mozeliak has been named interim GM, and is in the running to earn the full-time job. The Cardinals, just a year after winning the World Series, stumbled to a 78-84 campaign in 2007.Hired in 1994, Jocketty has seen the Cardinals turn into perennial winners during his 13-year reign. During his time on the job, the Cardinals won six NL Central division titles and one NL wild card, with two World Series appearances and the one win last season. He had one year left on his contract.
"Walt will be remembered as the Cardinals' GM during one of the most successful and memorable periods in team history and we will always be extremely grateful for his contributions to our many triumphs over the past 13 seasons," said chairman of the board and general partner Bill DeWitt Jr. "It is now time to move forward with an undivided purpose that is consistent with the St. Louis Cardinals philosophy of building and operating the best top-to-bottom organization in baseball."It is unclear what effect, if any, Jocketty's departure will have on Tony La Russa's future as Cardinals manager. LaRussa's contract expired after this season and, though he's been asked by St. Louis management to return in 2008, he has not made a decision.
