The David Beckham era has officially begun in the United States.

The L.A. Galaxy official introduced the English soccer star as its newest player Friday.

"This is a historic event not just for Los Angeles, but for MLS and soccer in the United States," Galaxy president and general manager Alexi Lalas said.

It was also a big day for Beckham.

"I've played for two of the biggest club sides in the world in Manchester United and Real Madrid. I've played for 11 years for my country and still am playing for my country. I've always looked for challenges in my career and something exciting in my life," said Beckham, who is expected to make his debut with the team on July 21 against Chelsea.

"This is one of the biggest challenges I've ever taken on."

The international star arrived in the United States on Thursday, when his former Spice Girl wife, Victoria, and their three children were met by a throng of reporters and photographers at Los Angeles International Airport after a flight from London.

Their arrival ended months of anticipation.

The Galaxy announced Jan. 11 that the 32-year-old midfielder agreed to a five-year contract that could bring him as much as $250 million to join the team following the June 30 expiration of his contract with Real Madrid.

In four seasons with the Spanish club, Beckham scored 13 goals in 116 league games.

Beckham, who began his career with Manchester United in his native England and has played for the English national team since 1996, is also known for his prowess on free kicks, which also sparked the titling of the 2002 film "Bend It Like Beckham."

Despite playing in the U.S., Beckham still hopes to stay in the England lineup and help the team qualify for next year's European Championship.
