We asked each Counselor of the Month to answer some frequently asked questions that may help you better utilize the counseling services offered in your student's high school. You'll find their answers below.

Kim Cooper - Gunnison High School

Q: How can a counselor help parents and students make the adjustment to freshman year in high school?

A: "The first contact I make with the 8th graders is in March to talk about Freshman Registration. I provide the basic information: What to expect when you come to high school, classes, activities, how to earn a credit, daily bell schedule, lunch, registration and locker information. The same day we offer a parent night. I provide the same information mentioned to parents. In addition, I provide specific details about the requirements for college admission, vocational school and military."

Q: What is the most important thing to do to prepare for college?
A: "My opinion...know who you are, what makes you unique, keep a balance between academics, athletics, activities, community, family and communication. Don't be afraid to ask questions, seek help, share with your parents and just go for it. Start the college process your freshman year and don't stop until you've been admitted and made your final decision."

Bob Morales - Overland High School

Q: What is the main function of a counselor?

A: "The main function of a counselor is to help students set goals and to successfully complete them. Being what students are, they need, in addition to academic guidance, social, emotional and psychological support to help them be prepared to enter a world of work that requires more education than ever. Students benefit most when parents, teachers, and school personal form a cooperative partnership. A counselor can serve as a liaison to help parents navigate through the challenging high school years."

Jo Anne Gearhart - Broomfield High School

Q: Is it important for parents and students to start seeing a counselor in the 9th grade?

A: "It is important to start right at the beginning in 9th grade. (Parents) Make an appointment with your student's school counselor and of course, involve your student as well. This meeting gives you, your student and the school counselor the opportunity to become acquainted. In your initial meeting with the school counselor, tell him or her about your expectations and hopes for your student. Use this opportunity to become familiar with the school counselor and to inform him/her of your interest in your student's education."

Q: How can a counselor help parents and students with college decisions in the 12th grade?

A: "Meeting with your school counselor is crucial. The school counselor provides guidance in completing college applications, letters of recommendation, financial aid documents and scholarship applications. Frequent communication between the parent, student and the school counselor is a must in the senior year."
