Joey M. Baum (17)
JB Pouches LLC

Summary: Joey Baum is "saving the world, one bag at a time" by creating reusable and recyclable bags that he has manufactured overseas.

Bio: High school senior Joey Baum joined the global marketplace at the age of 16 with his eco-friendly Joey Pouch shopping bag. Joey started his business "to help out the environment and learn how the business world works." At $3 each, his reusable polypropylene shopping bags take just 10% more energy to manufacture than standard plastic grocery bags and carry four times the load.

Joey commissioned a local graphic artist to produce his logo, "saving the world, one bag at a time," and located a manufacturer in Singapore via the internet for the initial order of his Joey Pouches. He then wired most of his start-up loan across the ocean. His risk paid off with 2,000 custom-made bags he could market at an impulse buy price. While his market is local—he sells his bags through Boulder area farmers markets and independent grocery stores—Joey's business concerns are global as currency exchange rates and oil prices impact the future of JB Pouches.
