United To Lay Off 352 More Pilots
Airline Cutting Schedule In 2003

United Airlines announced Tuesday that it will lay off 352 more pilots in January and February.

The airline said in a news release that the cuts are in accordance with its previously announced plan to decrease the airline's flying schedule in 2003

It will bring the total number of furloughed pilots to 1,196.

"This is a very difficult announcement to make because of the impact it will have on our employees and their families," said Steve Forte, United's senior vice president for flight operations.

The airline currently has about 8,600 pilots.

Monday, the airline and its mechanics announced that the union would hold a second vote on a tentative deal that would give wage concessions to the airline to avoid bankruptcy.
