WASHINGTON -- President George W. Bush spent the day at his Texas ranch, letting the Republican Party chief criticize Democratic rival John Kerry.
Ed Gillespie criticized Kerry for saying in an interview in The New York Times Magazine that, "we have to get back to the place we were, where terrorists are not the focus of our lives" but rather a nuisance.
Gillespie said that appears to equate terrorism to such crimes as prostitution and illegal gambling, which can be reduced but not eliminated.Appearing on CBS' "Face the Nation, " Gillespie said Kerry's thinking demonstrates a "disconcerting pre-Sept. 11, 2001, mindset that will not make our country safer."John Kerry, meanwhile, was in Florida Sunday trying to court the black vote.He attended one mass with Haitian Catholics and then a Baptist service, which included prominent black leaders Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. At Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Miami, Kerry referred to the disputed Florida recount in the 2000 presidential race by saying, "We have an unfinished march in this nation.""Never again will a million African Americans be denied their right to exercise their vote in the United States of America," he promised.Bush and Kerry will meet for their third and final debate of the 2004 election season Wednesday night in Arizona. The debate at the Arizona State University in Tempe will be moderated by Bob Schieffer, moderator for "Face the Nation."
