Coors Has Desire To Serve Country

Brewing Magnate Says His Background Will Help

POSTED: 2:05 pm MDT August 4, 2004

On Aug 10, we'll know which two candidates will face off for Colorado's open United States Senate seat.

7NEWS is profiling the four candidates that are hoping to succeed Ben Nighthorse Campbell.

7NEWS reporter Hendrik Sybrandy sat down with Republican candidate Pete Coors to talk about his campaign to be the next senator from Colorado.

For years, Pete Coors says, Colorado's U.S. senators were people he felt comfortable supporting. But when Ben Nighthorse Campbell announced he was retiring, Coors saw no worthy successor, and decided to step in himself.

"I don't need the job. I'm doing this because I really have a deep sense of desire to serve my country and make whatever sacrifices to make that happen," said Coors.

The chairman of Coors Brewing Company offers straight talk and honest answers, Sybrandy says.

"I've lived within budgets and created jobs," Coors said.

Coors said his business background would help him cut taxes, spending and huge deficits.

"I want to go to Washington to be a conscience for the people of Colorado, people of America, as a senator, to bring some discipline into that process," he said .

Much the way, he says, he's run things in Golden -- the way he's negotiated deals all around the world.

"We solve problems, we get people together, we look at ways to find solutions," Coors said.

"Coors has some tree-sized advantages in this race," Sybrandy says. "First: his name. Second: his money. He has three times the war chest as his primary opponent. That helps him reach more voters."

"I can't go shake 350,000 hands, I can't see 350,000 people." Coors admitted . But he has toured a good part of this state and he looks forward to tackling Washington, where problem solving and discipline is often in short supply.

"I believe I can work (with) just about everybody in Washington," Coors said.

7NEWS is profiling the candidates each night. Thursday night, Ken Salazar gives his views. On Thursday night, we'll talk to Bob Schaffer.

Remember, the primary election is Aug. 10.
