The race to be Colorado's newest senator is heating up. On Monday, the two Republicans hoping to take the spot of retiring Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell debated for the first time.

Pete Coors and Bob Shaffer addressed the issues on KCOL radio in Fort Collins. The two will face off again Monday night at a meeting of the Denver Metro Young Republicans. That will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Marriott at Interstate 25 and Hampden.

The top two Democratic candidates have not decided on just when they're going to debate but say they will soon.

Over the weekend, educator Mike Miles learned that his name will be in the top spot on the Democratic primary ballot.

Miles beat out Attorney General Ken Salazar for that spot at the state Democratic assembly in Pueblo. Miles picked up 51 percent of the delegates, compared to 49 percent for Salazar, who had been favored as the "easy win."

Both men will be on the Aug. 10 primary ballot but the victory gives Miles top billing.

Salazar's campaign touted the debates as a way for Salazar to highlight "mainstream" values that make him attractive to a broad group of voters.

Miles has called for the debates before.

"I want it to be as free-flowing as possible," Miles said. "If the moderator will not ask him the hard questions, I will. He is not going to be able to hide behind nice words."
