DENVER -- 7NEWS reporter Russell Haythorn is blogging live from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science where President Barack Obama is scheduled to sign the $787 billion stimulus package.10:11 a.m.OK, so here's the schedule for the day.
Obama is set to arrive in Denver at 12:05 p.m. It will take 25 minutes for the motorcade to move from Buckley Air Force Base to the museum, although his exact route is not known. We will not be flying Air Tracker 7 over the motorcade because there is a 30-mile no-fly restriction until 2 p.m.His speech is scheduled to be delivered at 12:40 p.m. He will depart from Buckley at 3:45 p.m.There's an anti-stimulus bill rally at the Capitol starting at 11 a.m. We will also have a reporter there.10:08 a.m.Just got a good look at the passes that allow people to get into the museum. The presidential seal and the white house are upside down. Will be providing a picture shortly.9:46 a.m.A group of about 60 members of the media have gathered outside the north entrance of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Media access is expected to begin at 10 a.m.There are very few pedestrians near the museum. A small crowd of about 10 people has gathered along Colorado Boulevard. One is holding a large sign reading, "No New Taxes."There is yellow tape around the entire perimeter of the museum and patrol units from the Denver Police Department are staggered every 20 yards or so along the perimeter.11:31 a.m.There's a large crowd now gathering in the southeast atrium of the museum. Various dignitaries and VIP's are in the crowd, including former Denver mayor's Wellington Webb and Federico Pena.12:21 p.m.We're now listening to a prayer. The president has arrived at the museum. He should be taking the podium here in the southeast atrium soon. We just heard the national anthem and the pledge. The secretary of Interior Ken Salazar is taking the stage.12:25 p.m.It's kind of a funny thing. In addition to their professional video and still photography cameras, many members of the media have personal cameras tucked into their coat pockets.12:27 p.m.Interior secretary has now left the stage. We're not sure when the president will take the stage. There seems to be a lot of anticipation and excitement in this room. Most of the dignitaries and VIP's are supporters of the president.12:34 p.m.This is most definitely not a campaign rally. This is a somewhat small room full of democratic supporters of President Obama.12:38 p.m.The national press pool has now entered the room. The president should be in the room soon.12:41 p.m.The president is now officially one minute late.12:43 p.m.This is certainly a politically charged room. Every prominent democrat from the state and region appears to be in the room. Governor Bill Ritter is here as well as Mayor John Hickenlooper, Rep. Betsy Markey, Rep. Jared Polis, former Denver mayor's Webb and Pena.12:45 p.m.The president and vice president have just entered the room. Gov. Bill Ritter is speaking.12:47 p.m.The governor says there is not better place for Obama to sign the stimulus package than right here in Colorado, "the home of the new energy economy."12:53 p.m.Vice President Joe Biden says, today is the day we start to "turn things around." Biden says, "we should have the best transportation system in the world, and we don't."1:02 p.m.The owner of a small solar company called Namaste Solar is now speaking. He says the stimulus package will allow his company to add jobs. Without the package he said they were looking at layoffs.1:06 p.m.President now speaking.1:09 p.m.Obama said it is good to be back in Denver. He says this is the most sweeping economic stimulus package ever passed.1:14 p.m.One woman in the back of the crowd says, "How come that solar guy's company is being bailed out? What about all the other small businesses struggling?" Another gentleman says, "every company in America will benefit from this."1:16 p.m.Obama says Boulder is on pace to be the country's first smart grid city.1:18 p.m.Obama says tax benefits will go, "not to the wealthiest Americans, but those in the middle-class."1:20 p.m.Police with the Denver PD staged on multiple balconies in the southeast atrium. Atrium is three stories tall.1:23Obama finishes speech.1:25President walks over to the desk on the stage and uses 10 pens to sign the bill. There's silence except for the camera flashes. He stands up and flashes his trademark smile. Presidential desk on the stage is emblazoned with presidential seal.
