Udall Takes Oath As Colorado's Newest Senator

Newly sworn-in Sen. Mark Udall said trying to fix the country's economy is "Job 1."

The Colorado Democrat said in a phone call with reporters Tuesday that the most pressing matter is to put people back to work.

Udall was sworn in Tuesday after serving in the House since 1997. In November, he won the Senate seat vacated by Republican Wayne Allard.

“We have got to put people to work. It is jobs, jobs, jobs,” Udall said. “It’s also a six-month time frame to make sure that Wall Street is regulated and to make sure that credit is available for small businesses and for people who want to buy homes."

Colorado’s senior senator said it may take longer than President-elect Barack Obama wants to pass a $775 billion economic stimulus bill. Obama wants to sign a bill soon after he takes office on Jan. 20.

Udall said he plans to propose bills outlining a comprehensive energy package and designating wilderness areas in Colorado.
