DENVER -- It appears some of Colorado's outgoing congressional leaders are closing up shop early.Even though Rep. Marilyn Musgrave's official last day isn't until Jan. 3, no one was answering the phone at her Washington office or her Greeley office on Tuesday. The message at Rep. Tom Tancredo's Washington office is more direct. It says the office is already officially closed. That’s concerning to some of their constituents.
"Just about anybody that I know is required to work up until the last day they're getting paid," said one Highlands Ranch resident. "Our congressmen, our elected officials should do the same."A spokesman for Tancredo's office said Wednesday that the House of Representatives administration dictates when outgoing incumbents are to move out. The spokesman said administration has already asked Tancredo to move. Although Tancredo's Washington office is now closed, his Colorado offices will remain open until mid to late December according to the spokesman.Metro State political science professor Norman Provizer said it is normal for outgoing officials to leave early during the lame duck period."In part, it's built into the system. You have certain lapses. Periods when things are about to change, but not quite at that point," Provizer said."Members of Congress are really not operating a 24-hour shopping center. Where you go into the supermarket any time and people are there. There are certain realities. We're in the midst of a transition, so I'm not sure it's something that we should be particularly upset over," said Provizer. At outgoing Sen. Wayne Allard’s offices in Englewood and Washington, staff members were answering the phone Tuesday."We're definitely still here. It's just that things are definitely very quiet. We're just slowly starting to close shop,” said press aide Kaitlyn Knoll. “We don't have a full staff. People have been leaving. But we still have staff up front answering the phones."
