Deadline Looms For Voter Registration

Many Voters Seek Mail-In Ballot

If you haven't registered to vote, you only have a few more days.

The deadline to register is 5 p.m. Monday.

Hundreds, if not thousands of people are trying to beat the deadline.

"This has been a hectic day," said Alton Dillard of the Denver Election Division. "Monday may be even more so."

Many would-be voters are calling the clerk’s office to see if they're registered. Hundreds of others are showing up in person to register, or to ask for a mail-in ballot.

"I just moved here," Kasey Rabideau told 7NEWS. "I want to make sure that I can get my mail-in ballot in time."

Election officials said that nearly half of the 402,000 people who are active voters in Denver have asked for mail-in ballots.

"We're expecting record registration and we're also expecting record turnout," Dillard said.

Many people have registered during special drives on college campuses, outside grocery stores, or on the 16th Street Mall. There was a drive under way Friday on the Auraria campus.

Some people who registered during a special drive can't help but wonder whether their names will actually show up in the poll books.

7NEWS asked the Secretary of State's office what happens if someone claims they registered but the election judge can't find the voter's name in the book.

"(They) should bring their registration receipt with them," said Richard Coolidge, spokesman for the Secretary of State.

Coolidge said the receipt is the bottom portion of a registration application. He said if you fail to bring that receipt with you, don't panic.

"The election judge will issue a provisional ballot that will be counted once the registration question is cleared up," Coolidge said.

If you have questions about your registration status, you can contact your county clerk, or you can go online at www.GoVoteColorado.com.
