McCain Pledges To Appoint Democrats To Cabinet

Obama Would Appoint Hagel, Lugar, Report Says

Sen. John McCain pledges that if elected president, he'd appoint Democrats to his Cabinet.

He said there's nothing partisan about tackling the nation's toughest problems.

In an interview taped Saturday for air on Sunday, McCain tells CBS's "Face the Nation" he intends to have the best people in America in his Cabinet.

It's believed that McCain closely considered Sen. Joe Lieberman as a running mate. The Connecticut independent is a former Democrat.

In previous administrations, presidents have sometimes appointed a member of the opposite party to their Cabinets. One prominent example: former GOP Sen. William Cohen served as defense secretary under President Bill Clinton.

The Huffington Post reported that Sen. Barack Obama is hoping to appoint cross-party figures to his cabinet "such as Chuck Hagel, the Republican senator for Nebraska and an opponent of the Iraq war, and Richard Lugar, leader of the Republicans on the Senate foreign relations committee."
