Thousands Spend Thursday At Invesco Field Waiting For Obama

Spectators Say Hours In Sun Worth It

POSTED: 7:53 pm MDT August 28, 2008

Thousands of die-hard Democrats began lining up Thursday morning outside the Invesco Field checkpoints.

By 2 p.m., they were streaming into the stadium to grab a good seat.

They came to hear Sen. Barack Obama accept his party's nomination for president.

"This is as exciting as it gets," said Nicole LeFavour, a delegate from Idaho.

"To me, this is the privilege of a lifetime," added Linda Crozier, "to be here at this historic occasion."

Many of those in the stadium spent hours under a cloudless sky waiting for the main event.

"I'd sit two days in the sun to be here," said Laura Chambers of Bethesda, Md. "I’m not kidding. We really are so lucky."

Chambers said everyone from her son’s elementary school teacher to their cab driver were envious that they were heading to Denver for Obama’s acceptance speech.

Volunteer Maricor Coquia didn't mind spending hours in the sun either.

"I don't care," she said. "I'm just looking forward to being part of this."

Fellow volunteer Chelsea Frankeo told 7NEWS, "It's such a huge election, and we're so excited."

Illinois delegate Victory Bell and his wife Carol entered the stadium wearing twin red, white and blue hats with gold lettering spelling Obama and silver lettering spelling Hillary.

"The presidential race is sort of like the Olympics," Carol said. "There's a silver and a gold."

The Bells wore their hats with the silver in front Wednesday. Thursday they turned the hats around and put the gold up front.

Presidential elector Chris Bray said, "It's tremendously exciting to be here, what can I say? We're here at 11 o'clock. It doesn't start until 7 p.m. We want to be here, have fun and be ready to cheer every moment."
