Barack Obama, D-Ill.: "For while Senator McCain was turning his sights to Iraq just days after 9/11, I stood up and opposed this war, knowing that it would distract us from the real threats we face. When John McCain said we could just "muddle through" in Afghanistan, I argued for more resources and more troops to finish the fight against the terrorists who actually attacked us on 9/11, and made clear that we must take out Osama bin Laden and his lieutenants if we have them in our sights. Former Vice President Al Gore: Gore said that if he'd been elected in 2000, the United States would not be bogged down in Iraq, would not be facing "a self-inflicted economic crisis," and the government would not be disregarding the Constitution or denying the climate crisis. "Today, we face essentially the same choice we faced in 2000 ..." he said. "John McCain, a man who has earned our respect on many levels, is now openly endorsing the policies of the Bush-Cheney White House and promising to actually continue them, the same policies all over again."
