Abundant Excess Key To Success

Organizers set out to have the greenest Democratic National Convention in History.

From selling carbon offsets, to using alternative fuel vehicles, organizers have made a comprehensive effort to "green" the convention.

They are also recycling at a whole new level.

There are receptacles throughout the Pepsi and Convention Center venues, but ultimately it is the convention goers responsibility to put the appropriate items in each container.

"I think it's great effort, it's a little bit confusing. I'm never really sure which one to put my cup or my plastic in but I like the effort," said one convention goer.

Fortunately for her and others, organizers thought of that.

An army of volunteers has fanned out across the venues to direct people on where to dispose of their waste.

"Actually, I was impressed that I had two people wave me down to help put my trash away," said another conventioneer.

The goal they have set is lofty.

"The overall goal is to reach 85% diversion. We think it's possible. We may exceed that," said Waste Management's Charles Bayley.

The company is in charge of infrastructure, putting out containers and coordinating pick-up and delivery to the appropriate facility.

Some convention participants expressed concern to 7News that large bags of signs were being thrown in the trash.

Call7 Investigator Theresa Marchetta located dozens of bags full of what looked like trash outside the Pepsi Center being sorted for recyclables by hand, by CSU volunteers.

Waste Management said it is weighing all the trucks going in and out of its recycling centers to get an idea of how much waste was diverted from the landfills.
