1,000 Free Bikes Available During Convention

POSTED: 8:15 am MDT August 15, 2008

The Denver Host Committee for the Democratic Convention has announced that 1,000 bikes will be available for free use through a bike-sharing company with just an ID and a credit card.

Freewheelin, Humana’s new bike-sharing program with the not-for-profit organization Bikes Belong, is a nationwide effort to supply individuals with easy and free access to bicycles, providing them with an environmentally friendly alternative to automobiles, while at the same time encouraging them to take steps to keep physically fit.

"This is an exceptional opportunity to show how well bicycling works for short trips in big cities," said Tim Blumenthal, Executive Director of Bikes Belong. "Considering that 41 percent of all trips in automobiles are two miles or less, bikes are an ideal alternative."

Several sites near the Pepsi Center will be in operation for people to check out a bike. If you register online, prior to the convention, the backers promise it will speed up the process. To pre-register, visit www.freewhellinwaytogo.com.
