Want Tickets To Obama's DNC Speech? Sign Up On Web Or Call

Tickets Already Offered On Craigslist

People who want tickets to Barack Obama's acceptance speech at Invesco Field on the fourth night of the Democratic National Convention can apply online, call or visit Obama's campaign office, DNC officials announced Wednesday afternoon.

The speech is scheduled for Aug. 28 and more than 76,000 seats are available.

More than half of the seats at the stadium will go to residents of Colorado and two-thirds of the tickets will be available to the mountain west and southwest, said Leah Daughtry, chief executive officer of the Democratic National Convention Committee.

Colorado residents who want to sign up for tickets need to visit Co.barackobama.com/invesco or call 888-468-7404 (TTY: 720-362-2208). They can also visit a local campaign office from now until Aug. 12.

On Aug. 15, individuals who signed up will be notified by e-mail, text or a phone call whether they received a ticket. Anyone not selected will be on the waiting list. The tickets will be distributed at the nine Democratic offices across Colorado.

"When we said we wanted to open the doors of this Convention to the community, we meant it," Daughtry said.

Volunteering is not required to receive tickets, and no background checks will be conducted on those applying, Daughtry said.

However, among the criteria for selection will be the ability to travel to Denver.

Officials just want to make sure that people who receive a ticket will go, and anyone from out of state who plans to attend has made definitive travel plans because they don't want any open seats in the stadium.

Delegates, delegate alternates, party officials, guest and others who are credentialed for the Pepsi Center will also be credentialed for Invesco Field. Those delegates will sit on the field, so they are not considered part of the "community credentials" being handed out.

Of the remaining credentials, the Obama campaign will also receive an allotment. The DNCC will distribute the remaining tickets to the Democratic parties in all other states, territories, the District of Columbia and to Democrats abroad.

The Obama campaign is trying to ensure that the tickets go to people who will actually use them and to voters who will actively work for Obama's election. There is also concern that the tickets could end up on eBay or other Internet sites that sell tickets.

One enterprising seller was already advertising two tickets for sale on craigslist.

"The seats were given to me by a delegate that will not be able to attend," the seller stated.

Other people were posting on craigslist that they want to buy tickets -- one offering $3,050 for two tickets.

Obama's speech comes on the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a dream" speech.

Marva Bey is one of the Obama supporters hoping to get a ticket.

7NEWS talked with her Tuesday as she came to Democratic Party headquarters to get an Obama bumper sticker.

Bey said the night will be "historic."

She added, "I won't get an opportunity like that again."

More than 20,000 requests have already come in from out of state.

While they may be able to get tickets, they will have a much tougher time finding a hotel room.

Matt Conway, who works to provide private housing for convention-goers, said that people who get a hotel room should expect to pay top dollar for lodging.

"Through exciting public programs and civic engagement efforts, our goal has always been to bring the Convention out into the Metro Denver community," said Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. "Now we can bring more of Metro Denver inside the Convention itself. The Thursday night event at INVESCO Field at Mile High is a tremendous opportunity for local residents, and we encourage everyone who is interested in attending to contact the Colorado Campaign for Change and take part in this historic process. Whether you have the opportunity to experience the event firsthand or watch it on television, the Rocky Mountains and the Denver skyline will provide a stunning backdrop to this important night of democracy in action."

Coloradans who volunteer with the Obama campaing will also have the opportunity to receive all-star seating for Obama's speech.

"One of the best ways we can introduce Colorado voters to our campaign and our vision for this country is getting them involved in the Convention," said Obama's national campaign co-chair Federico Pena. "We are delighted that the DNCC is allocating so many community credentials to our state. It will allow Colorado voters of all parties who want take a look and a listen to our message of hope the chance to do so in person."
