DENVER -- Denver's free speech controversy was summed up by one of the lawyers as a simple equation.Steve Zansberg said it's all about, "location, location, location."A federal judge said she'll rule soon on whether changes need to be made to protest rules for the Democratic National Convention.
Lawyers for protesters as well as Denver and the Secret Service delivered closing arguments in the case on Thursday. As it stands now, the protesters said they won't be within sight or earshot of delegates as they enter the Pepsi Center. The city has set up a protest zone 700 feet away from the main entrance to the Pepsi Center. The parade route keeps protesters blocks away from the convention. Lawyers for authorities said they have taken protesters' rights into consideration as they plan for the Aug. 25-28 convention.Attorney Jim Lyons told Judge Marcia Krieger that while the plaintiffs in the case may not have violent intentions, other groups might take advantage of less stringent standards.City officials said Thursday that free speech has to be balanced against safety and the need to keep streets and businesses in Denver open.Protestors are also upset about plans for Barack Obama's acceptance speech at Invesco Field.A hearing on that issue is scheduled for Aug. 12.
