DENVER -- The city of Denver is being targeted for what some are calling outlandish guidelines aimed at caterers for the Democratic National Convention.According to Sunday's New York Times, Denver's Host Committee has requested that caterers follow specific guidelines in preparing food for the convention. The 28-page contract asks that food come in "at least three of the following five colors: red, green, yellow, blue/purple and white." Garnishes do not count. In addition to color restrictions, the contract states that no fried items are allowed and the majority of food must be locally or organically grown. Each plate prepared for the convention must also be 50 percent fruits and vegetables.
Denver City Councilman Charlie Brown criticized the host committee for not appealing to "mainstream America." He want the host committee to drop the menu guidelines."In trying to promote a healthy lifestyle to delegates, party insiders ironically have created a politically unhealthy message. A political party that advocates a 'big tent' philosophy should also celebrate an inclusive 'big table' that includes vegetarians as well as those who prefer 'cornbread and chicken' sung with a western twang," Brown said.According to the Times, many caterers around Denver have chosen not to work for the event.
