DENVER -- It was a beautiful day in the Mile High city. The streets were flooded with people on bikes and the parks were full of people enjoying the sun. So one stands to wonder why 175 people chose to be cooped up inside the Colorado Convention Center. The answer? They were undergoing training for the Democratic National Convention, which is making its way to Denver Aug. 25-28.The volunteers are just the tip of the iceberg. In total, 26,000 have signed up to help.
The duties range from welcoming people at their hotels, assisting people with transportation, and encouraging the city's visitors to "go green."7NEWS spoke to several of the volunteers who were all smiles, particularly after the nation's presumptive nominee was declared Saturday following the concession of Sen. Hillary Clinton, who suspended her bid and congratulated Sen. Barack Obama on his victory."Unique, revolutionary almost. It's certainly revolutionary with the first woman and the first African American -- it's a special year,'' said Michael Winn, 25.Another volunteer, Steven Bobb, said he signed up even before volunteers could fill out a form. He said spending Saturday in the Colorado Convention Center is a small concession if it means the possibility of a brush with history."Just to shake hands. I mean they're not going to know who I am, but just to shake hands (with the presidential nominee) would be really great," said Bobb.A second volunteer training will take place July 26 at the Colorado Convention Center.
