Schaffer Yanks Ad After It Shows Wrong Mountain

Picture Of Pikes Peak Actually Mount McKinley

Bob Schaffer's new TV ad may claim that "Colorado is my life" but bloggers have discovered that the mountain pictured in the ad is not in Colorado at all.

The Senate hopeful has had to yank his TV ad on the same day he unveiled it after it was discovered that the famous mountain pictured in the commercial isn't in Colorado but in Alaska.

The picture of the snowcapped peak is shown in the background as Schaffer touts his Colorado roots and talks about how he proposed to his wife on Pikes Peak.

But the pictured peak is not Pikes Peak but Mount McKinley, in Alaska.

Schaffer's campaign manager Dick Wadham admits the error and said a new, corrected version of the ad will be unveiled Wednesday evening.

"Our media consultant made a very big mistake. And it was a mistake that could have been avoided. We asked the media consultant about that particular shot last Friday because the mountains weren't recognizable to us. He confirmed that it was a stock mountain photo of Colorado," Wadhams said.

The spot, once corrected, will play in Grand Junction and Colorado Springs. It is an autobiographical look at Schaffer and lays out message that "Washington needs Colorado common sense, not more business-as-usual," Wadhams said.

Wadhams said he was informed of the error Wednesday by a Denver Post reporter.

Wadhams said Rep. Mark Udall had to pull a campaign ad last fall. It contained C-SPAN footage of Udall and violated Congressional rules that forbid using recordings of House floor speeches for political purposes.

Schaffer is running against Udall for Wayne Allard's senate seat. Allard is retiring.
