DENVER -- A lottery to pick which groups get to use Denver parks during the Democratic National Convention has been postponed after a protest group complained it was left out. Katherine Archuleta, the city's liaison for the convention, said Tuesday the lottery has been rescheduled for Thursday. A member of Denver-based Recreate 68 said her name was left off applications for four of the five days she sought a permit for Civic Center park downtown.
Archuleta said the database of applicants appears to be accurate, but some of those applicants didn't make it onto the tickets that were to be drawn from a box. The selection process was watched closely by protest groups who want to get their message out during the convention. More than 200 groups or individuals applied for permits for the city's 12 parks. Danielle Versluys of the anti-abortion group Survivors of The Abortion Holocuast said her group wants to get access to the parks because her group is targeting young people and wants to hold outdoor concerts and rallies.Glenn Spagnuolo of Recreate-68 called it an embarrasment that the city could not get the lottery picks done in time.He told 7NEWS that thousands of protestors will be coming to Denver this summer and the permitting process is essential.
