Bush Meets Church Hero During Fundraising Stop In State

DENVER -- President George W. Bush, who is in Colorado to raise funds for GOP candidates Thursday, met the church volunteer guard who intervened to stop an assault by a man who had already killed four people.He met with Jeanne Assam and told her how proud of her he was for confronting Matthew Murray, the 24-year-old man who had killed two people at an Arvada church mission before driving to Colorado Springs to attack churchgoers at the New Life Church.Murray killed himself when confronted by Assam, a former Minneapolis policewoman. She shot him several times but the coroner determined he died of self-inflicted wounds.
During his visit to Colorado, Bush also honored a woman who has volunteered for seven years at a program that provides eye care for the homeless. Bush presented the President's Volunteer Service Award to Stout Street Eye Clinic volunteer Cherie Yager.Yager previously worked as an optician in the Denver area for 25 years. More than 4,000 people received treatment at the eye clinic last year. She was also honored as a 7 Everyday Hero by 7NEWS.Bush typically honors local volunteers on his trips around the country.The President's visit was primarily to raise money for former Republican congressman Bob Schaffer. He is running against Rep. Mark Udall of Boulder for the seat being vacated by Wayne Allard.The Federal Election Commission released new fundraising totals on Thursday that show Udall with a two to one margin over Schaffer.Udall has $3.6 million in available funds; Schaffer has $1.3 million.Political analyst Eric Sonderman told 7NEWS that the Colorado Senate race will be one of the most competitive and expensive races in the country.
