DENVER -- With the debate over immigration and border security a center focus at the state capitol, Gov. Bill Ritter has yet to decide what to do with a bill critics say would make it too easy to get a driver's license.Ritter was under some new pressure Wednesday to veto the bill with Secretary of State Mike Coffman and former Gov. Dick Lamm as well as other leading law enforcement officials urging him to kill the bill. The main concern was not ID theft or fraud but rather life and death, opponents said.
"A driver's license in the wrong hands is more dangerous than a machine gun," Lamm said.In calling on Ritter to veto the bill, Lamm repeatedly cited the 911 attack on America, saying investigators discovered the terrorists used phony driver's licenses as a part of their plot to board and hijack American airliners.Critics of Colorado's new requirements said they should be stricter then ever before."We are living in a different environment and unfortunately it is going to take a greater sacrifice from all our citizens," Coffman said. The plan to overhaul the driver's license ID requirements came out of controversy and a court case last year over what was considered acceptable.Legitimate applicants -- often the disabled, homeless and elderly -- couldn't meet some of the strict standards."You can't exist. You can't rent an apartment, and you can't get a job," said state Sen. Paula Sandoval. "(There are) many things you can't do without an ID."Sandoval said the new rules are a good compromise.Meanwhile, Ritter has been flooded with letters and calls from people on both sides of the issue."Even in some instance, if the governor doesn't read all the mail, believe me they count it," Lamm said. The governor's office said he has not made up his mind but said he has been getting a lot of pressure from people on both sides of the issue. He has until June 4 to make a final decision.
