CASTLE ROCK, Colo. -- Douglas County Clerk and Recorder, Jack Arrowsmith, released the findings of an elections panel to County Commissioners Tuesday night. The panel was formed following long lines that voters experienced on Nov. 7, 2006, in an effort to address the situation and find possible solutions. The panel determined many of the long lines were a result of insufficient electronic voting machines as well as technical problems related to those machines.
"There was not enough equipment and not enough locations large enough to handle the demand," said Bob Meldrum, an election judge during the past election.Members of the panel recommend the county implement one of the following three scenarios:1. "Precinct Polling Places" where voters only use paper ballots2. "Vote Center" where voters only use electronic voting machines3. "Super Precinct Center" where voters can use either paper ballots or electronic voting machinesCounty Commissioner, Jack Hilbert, says he is confident what happened this past November will not be repeated. But his "biggest concern is that they take care of the ABCs," which he describes as "the current situation, the back-up plan and the catastrophic failure and what we do in those situations."Douglas County Officials say they will decide on a new voting system before July.
