Meetings scheduled for next week could determine where the 2008 Democratic National Convention will be held, and Denver is in the running.

If chosen to host the convention, thousands of Democratic delegates would gather at the Pepsi Center to nominate a presidential candidate.

The only time Denver hosted a national convention was in 1908. Democrats nominated William Jennings Bryan.

Two years ago it was Boston's turn as Democrats picked John Kerry. Many Democrats said it's time to head west again.

Elbra Wedgeworth is president of the committee pushing the Mile High City.

"Everyone says Denver, Denver, Denver is the place to go," said Wedgeworth.

Councilwoman Debbie Willhite is the committee's executive director.

Traveling in Arkansas on Friday, she told 7NEWS there are key meetings scheduled next week between the Democratic National Committee and the cities of Denver and New York.

She said she believes Denver has a 90 percent chance of landing the convention.

November's election results certainly helped.

Colorado elected Democrat Bill Ritter as governor and Democrats held on to both the state House and Senate.

"Politically we are very much in play. We feel with all the victories that happened on Nov. 7, that the road to the presidency is through the Rocky Mountain West."

The convention would bring an estimated 35,000 people to Denver.

The economic benefit is estimated at between $150 million and $200 million.
