One campaign group is taking things too far according to dozens of residents who received phone calls in the middle of the night. When their phone rang early Sunday morning, the two residents that 7NEWS spoke to thought the worst. They thought it was someone calling about a death or a car accident. So you can imagine their reaction when they learned the call was about politics."It was just another example of overzealousness," said Jim Stahlhut.
The call was a recording for Colorado Family Action, an organization associated with Focus on the Family. The recorded voice on the other end of the 1:45 a.m. call said, "Hello, this is Sen. Bill Armstrong with an important message about the upcoming election. Vote no on Referendum I, the domestic partnership issue. And while you are at it, vote yes on Amendment 43.""They are deterring people from voting their way by doing this type of stuff. It definitely would make me go run the other way," said Stahlhut. "I was totally disgusted. It's time to back off. You can state your opinion, but not put it in your face, in your house."Sally Eck received the exact same phone call at 2:06 a.m., jolting her awake with fears that something was wrong."I answered the phone because I thought something horrific had happened to one of my kids," Eck said. "I was infuriated and just hung up the phone."A spokesman for Colorado Family Action said, "We had an agreement with the vendor that the calls would go out between 9 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. We are very disappointed that this agreement was broken. We want to personally apologize to the people who were called outside of the agreed-upon times."For residents who received the call, that's of little consolation now."I don't think as a citizen I should have to put up with that," said Stahlhut."I think I speak for millions, I am sick of it," Eck said.Colorado Family Action said after Sunday's phone calls, it terminated the contract with the vendor and will no longer be doing business with them. However, don't expect the campaign calls to end. You can expect to hear other recorded messages from John Elway and Gov. Bill Owens as candidates gear up for next Tuesday's elections.
