St. Louis Has Canucks Singin' The Blues

POSTED: 11:47 pm MST February 8, 2006

Keith Tkachuk and Petr Cajanek each tallied a goal and added two assists as the St. Louis Blues defeated the Vancouver Canucks, 4-2, at General Motors Place.

Mark Rycroft added a goal and an assist for the Blues, who have won three games in a row.

"We've been playing really well of late," said St. Louis' Dallas Drake. "Ever since we got Walt (Tkachuk) back, he adds a different dimension to our line- up. We just work really hard and get a lot of our goals because of the forecheck. I think you've seen a good example of that tonight."

Curtis Sanford started in net for St. Louis and made 12 saves in the first period. He was replaced by Patrick Lalime at the start of the second stanza due to back spasms. Lalime finished with 19 saves on 20 shots.

Todd Bertuzzi and Richard Park scored while Markus Naslund picked up two assists for the Canucks, who lost for only the second time in the last six games overall.

Alex Auld allowed four goals on 24 shots in the loss.

Midway through the opening period, the Blues grabbed a 1-0 lead on Cajanek's seventh-goal of the season.

At the 14:18 mark of the first, Vancouver tied it up at 1-1 after Park sent a weak wrist shot from the right circle that beat Sanford through his five-hole.

St. Louis jumped back ahead at 2-1 with three minutes left in the first period after Vladimir Orszagh banged home a rebound in front after Cajanek's shot from the slot was stopped by Auld.

The Blues then took a 3-1 advantage into the first intermission as Rycroft found a loose puck after a scrum in front and pushed the disc over the goal line with only 16.5 seconds left in the opening period.

Only 3:57 into the middle session, Bertuzzi's 20th goal of the season made it a one-goal game. From behind the net, Naslund dished the puck out in front to Bertuzzi, who shielded off a defender and sent the puck through the legs of Lalime for the power-play goal.

The Blues went up 4-2 at the 7:45 mark of the final frame, scoring on a two- man advantage. Scott Young won a faceoff and the puck bounced to Tkachuk in the slot and he slipped the disc past Auld for a two-goal cushion that held up.

"The five-on-three, me and (teammate) Brendan (Morrison) got mixed up," said Canucks defenseman Mattias Ohlund on the play." It was a bad goal from our part, obviously. But we didn't play good enough to beat these guys."
