Wild Battle Thrashers In Atlanta

(Sports Network) - The Minnesota Wild will hit the road for the first time this season, as they head to Atlanta to take on the Thrashers at Philips Arena.

The Wild, who went 19-17-5 as the road club a year ago, start a three-game swing tonight after winning their season opener at home on Saturday. Eric Belanger posted two goals, including one during a three-goal second period, to help lead Minnesota to a 4-3 victory over the Boston Bruins.

It was the sixth multi-goal game of Belanger's career and first since March 2, 2007 when he was a member of the Thrashers.

Marc-Andre Bergeron and Antti Miettinen each scored in their Wild debut, while Mikko Koivu and Pierre-Marc Bouchard had two assists each. Nineteen-year-old forward Colton Gillies posted a helper in his NHL debut for Minnesota, which won the Northwest Division last year with 98 points.

Defenseman Kim Johnsson, who had an assist on Saturday, will play in his 600th NHL game tonight.

Netminder Niklas Backstrom made 34 stops in the victory over Boston, but has lost his only career start versus Atlanta. That came on March 7 in a 3-2 shootout loss.

That victory by the Thrashers came in the last meeting between these two clubs and snapped a six-game losing streak to Minnesota.

Atlanta posted a big 7-4 win in its season opener at home last Friday, but fell in defeat the following day against Florida. The Thrashers did manage to pick up a point however, falling in overtime, 3-2.

Jason Williams and Vyacheslav Kozlov each scored for the Thrashers, who failed to post a shot in overtime.

Kari Lehtonen stopped 35-of-38 shots faced in the win. Lehtonen has faced the Wild just once in his career, taking a loss after allowing five goals in a January 2, 2007 setback.

Atlanta begins a three-game homestand tonight and will also host New Jersey on Thursday before getting a visit from Buffalo two days later.

Like Johnsson, Thrashers defenseman Mathieu Schneider will also hit a milestone tonight, as he is set to play in his 1,200th career game. Schneider is third amongst active defenseman in games played and will become the 74th player in league history to reach the 1,200-game mark.
