Sharks Aim For Fourth Straight Home Win As Avs Visit San Jose

(Sports Network) - The San Jose Sharks continue their longest homestand of the season tonight, as they welcome the Colorado Avalanche to HP Pavilion.

The Sharks began a six-game homestand with a 3-2 shootout win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday. The win improved San Jose to 12-11-4 at home as it claimed its third straight win as the host.

Jeremy Roenick posted the game-winning goal in the fifth round of the shootout over the weekend. The American-born center broke from the neutral zone and skated wide right before closing in on Nikolai Khabibulin and beating the netminder clean on a wrist shot that rang just inside the left post.

Evgeni Nabokov then gloved a shot by Chicago's Cam Barker to seal the win for the Sharks. Nabokov ended with 19 saves in posting his 29th win of the season, four more than he had all of last year.

Nabokov is 7-11-1 with a tie and 2.90 goals-against average in 20 career games versus Colorado, going 2-1-0 against them this year.

Jonathan Cheechoo scored and Marc-Edouard Vlasic found the back of the net for the first time since February 28 of last year, as San Jose won for the fourth time in five games. Joe Thornton and Craig Rivet each added a pair of assists.

The Sharks, who enter this test four points back of first-place Dallas in the Pacific Division, will also host Columbus, Nashville, Calgary and Edmonton on this stand.

Colorado has dropped four of its last six, with its most recent setback coming with a bit of dispute. Radim Vrbata scored with 1:37 remaining in overtime to lift the Phoenix Coyotes to a 4-3 victory over the Avalanche at the Pepsi Center on Monday.

In the extra session, Shane Doan and Vrbata worked a give-and-go and Vrbata's backhander was stopped by Colorado's Peter Budaj. However, Budaj was unable to corral the puck, and as players crashed the net, the puck slid through the goaltender's legs and trickled across the goal line. The goal was upheld following a video review.

T.J. Hensick scored twice and Budaj allowed four goals on 33 shots for the Avalanche. Tyler Arnason added two assists in defeat and Ian Laperriere scored.

Colorado has been stretched thin between the pipes, as Michael Wall was recalled from Lake Erie of the American Hockey League earlier in the day to backup Budaj. Jose Theodore (back spasms) and Tyler Weiman (foot) are both day-to-day, though Theodore is probable for tonight.

Theodore made 11 straight starts before leaving last Wednesday's win over Chicago due to his back ailment. Has has matched last season's win total (13) already this year, and is 5-6-0 with a 2.70 GAA in 11 career starts against the Sharks.

Budaj, meanwhile, is 2-4-0 with a 3.20 GAA in six starts lifetime versus San Jose.

Colorado has won four of its last five as the visiting club and plays the first of back-to-back road games tonight. The Avs will be in Vancouver on Saturday, and are 10-13-3 away from Denver on the year.

Colorado has fallen three points back of Minnesota for first place in the Northwest Division and is one behind Calgary for second place.

The Sharks have won two of three meetings with Colorado this season and they have also taken seven of the last 10 encounters overall. The Avs are 1-4 with a tie in their previous six stops at the Shark Tank.
