San Jose Sharks (3-1-0) At Vancouver Canucks (2-1-1), 10 P.m.
(Sports Network) - The San Jose Sharks try to rebound from their first loss of the young season tonight when they visit the Vancouver Canucks at GM Place. San Jose was 3-0 entering Thursday's matchup in Edmonton, but dropped a 6-4 tilt. Ryan Smyth scored his fifth-career hat trick in just over a two-minute span of the third period to lift the Oilers. Jonathan Cheechoo got his sixth-career hat trick for the Sharks, who won the first three games of the season for the first time since the 1999-2000 campaign and fell one short of recording their first 4-0 start in team history. Joe Thornton added three assists and Milan Michalek scored the other goal before the Sharks fell apart in the third period. Evgeni Nabokov stopped 26- of-32 shots in defeat. The Sharks led 4-2 before Smyth's outburst in the third period. Overall, the Oilers tallied four unanswered goals to finish the game. San Jose will host Dallas on Tuesday to begin a three-game homestand. Vancouver, which holds its home opener tonight, has lost its last two games after winning its first two. On Tuesday the Canucks dropped a 2-1 shootout tilt to host Minnesota. Petteri Nummelin scored the game-winning goal in a shootout to lift the Wild. Taylor Pyatt scored the lone regulation goal for Vancouver, while goaltender Roberto Luongo finished with 35 stops in the loss. Luongo has stopped 112 of the 119 shots he has faced in his first four regular season games as a Canuck. Luongo, of course, was acquired the night before the NHL Entry Draft in the blockbuster trade that sent Todd Bertuzzi to Florida. Vancouver will host Edmonton on Monday. The Canucks and Sharks split four meetings last season.
