COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Colorado Springs police have arrested more than 10 robbery suspects in connection with 42 cases as they combat a wave of 134 robberies in the past two months."We want to assure the criminals that if you commit an armed robbery in Colorado Springs you're going to become an arrest statistic," said police spokesman Lt. David Whitlock.Police didn't identify all those charged or wanted in connection with ongoing robbery investigations because they plan to make more arrests, Whitlock said.
Police said the crackdown has rounded up suspects ranging in age from 16 to 45 wanted in connection with a killing and ruthless robberies that alarmed the community. One robbery suspect, Aaron Wilkerson, 28, was also arrested in the Dec. 10 murder of a 50-year-old man who was beaten and stabbed in his home, which was set afire to cover the killer's tracks, authorities said.Wilkerson was also arrested in connection with three aggravated robberies in December. In one attack, he allegedly used a stun-gun on a 62-year-old woman, police said. In another, he and Brandon Armijo, 26, are accused of firing shots while robbing an airline pilot in the man's apartment parking lot. They also allegedly robbed a pizza delivery man."The point we're trying to make is there's not a real big separation between committing a homicide and committing a robbery," Whitlock said. "That's why we're pretty happy about getting (the suspects) in jail."Police also arrested eight suspected members of the so-called "Takeover-Counter Jumper" gang who are linked to at least 10 robberies in the city. Gang members may be involved in several other robberies committed in the city and El Paso and Pueblo counties. The gang earned their names for robberies in which up to three gunmen would hit Subway, Dominos, McDonald's and Papa Johns fast-food shops, jump the counter and intimidate workers and customers, Whitlock said. "They would terrorize employees to open safes," he said. Authorities are seeking the public's help in locating two fugitive members of the gang: Demond Smith, 22, and Bashir Ingram, 20.
