Big-city hospitals stay busy. At Denver Health Medical Center the emergency room alone sees more than 97,000 visits a year.

To keep things running smoothly, the hospital turns to its volunteers.

"It is dramatic, traumatic, and I have seen some pretty horrible things here," said volunteer Sara Varney.

But Varney has also seen some pretty amazing things in the E.R.

"The real everyday heroes are the people who work in this department," said Varney.

Varney is a retired teacher who just wanted to help at the hospital. And she wanted to be where the action is.

"When I first started working here they made me work the phones so I would learn the hospital and I said, 'When can I go to the emergency department?' and they finally let me go to the emergency department."

That was 20 years ago.

"She has basically had what amounts to a career here at Denver Health. She has been coming consistently on a weekly basis for almost 20 years," said Yvette Frampton, the president of the Volunteer Association at Denver Health.

Every Monday for 20-years is impressive, but not quite enough volunteering for Varney.

"Tuesdays I drive Meals on Wheels in Lakewood, which is very gratifying. And on Wednesday I work at the Action Center in Lakewood, which is a food bank and clothing bank out there. And then Thursday is my day off and Friday I work at the Capitol. I am a tour guide," said Varney.

That is what makes 7Everyday Heroes so outstanding: their commitment to take time to help others.
