A 69-year-old Denver woman taking a scuba diving class at the South Boulder Recreation Center nearly drown after she lost consciousness in the pool Sunday morning.

The Boulder Daily Camera reported that Melba Ellis received CPR from a lifeguard on duty.

She was taken to Boulder Community Hospital which declined to release her condition, the Camera reported.

Boulder police said the woman started panicking under water. An instructor offered the woman her air pack and the woman declined it. She then rose to the surface unconscious.
