Fuel Tanker Rolls On Berthoud Pass, Spilling Half Its Load
U.S. 40 Closed Over Berthoud Pass

EMPIRE, Colo. -- A tanker hauling gasoline rolled over on U.S. Highway 40 on Berthoud Pass, spilling a large amount of fuel Monday afternoon.The crash was reported near mile marker 245, according to the Colorado State Patrol, which said the driver was not injured. The crash occurred on the Clear Creek side of the pass, about 4 miles from the top.The tanker was carrying an estimated 8,200 gallons of fuel and about half of it spilled, according to Mindy Crane, with the Colorado Department of Transportation.
U.S. 40 was closed over the pass as hazardous materials crews worked to contain the fuel spill. The clean-up effort was expected to last an extended time, which could mean an extended closure for the major highway.The crash was reported to authorities at 12:25 p.m.U.S. 40 connects Interstate 70 with Winter Park, Fraser, Granby and Hot Sulphur Springs.It's not known yet if the accident is weather-related. Monday was the last day of summer, but the first day of snow for many parts of the metro area.The pass is at 11,307 feet in elevation and it was snowing at the time.
