Two boys have been charged with arson and criminal mischief after they set off fireworks Tuesday night and accidentally set fire to a nearby trailer in Fort Collins, police said.

The two boys had purchased fireworks from a stand near the trailer at the Timber Ridge South Mobile Home Park, the Poudre Fire Authority said.

Larimer County deputies were called at about 7 p.m. to 2300 W. County Road 38E to look into a report that a fire appeared to be a result of arson.

Witnesses told investigators that the boys had set off fireworks near a shrub, which caught fire, then ignited the nearby trailer.

A fire had consumed the south end of the trailer before it was extinguished. No one was in the trailer at the time and no injuries were reported.

The boys' names were not released because they are juveniles.

The investigator on this incident told the Larimer County Sheriff's Office, "It's easy for the unexpected to happen, and to happen quickly, during hot and dry conditions."

Poudre Fire Authority, the city of Fort Collins and the Town of Timnath wanted to remind everyone that fireworks of any type are illegal to sell, possess or use within city and town limits.

Confused on what fireworks are legal? A good rule of thumb to use for the entire state of Colorado is if it goes up in the air and/or goes bang, it is illegal.

When legal fireworks are used, adult supervision is required.
