Plane Lost 44 Years Ago Found Next To Ski Area

Wolf Creek Crash Killed 4 In 1964

POSTED: 9:53 am MDT September 4, 2008

A plane that crashed in 1964 was found recently, less than a mile from the Wolf Creek Ski Area, during a routine search and rescue training exercise.

The Mooney four-seater was re-discovered on Aug. 24, by members of the Dolores K-9 Search and Rescue team as part of a two-day training mission.

Searchers said the plane didn't appear to be old and immediately called in the discovery to the sheriff's office as a downed aircraft.

A check of the tail number revealed the plane had crashed on Oct. 30, 1964, killing four people on board. The names of those on board was not known.

A search leader said the plane apparently didn't look as old as it really was because it was preserved in deep snow around the Wolf Creek area year after year.
