POSTED: 1:18 pm MDT September 3, 2008

A Colorado Springs church said it was working to reunite a well-known homeless man with his daughter in Texas when he was found dead after a fight.

Police were awaiting confirmation of the man's name. The Gazette newspaper reported Wednesday that friends knew him as Frosty and that he was known around town.

Police said he was found dead at about 7:30 p.m., Monday, near the intersection of Bijou Street and Cascade Avenue amid "obvious signs" he had been in a fight.

Officers arrested Matthew C. Rowland, 48, of Colorado Springs, on suspicion of first-degree murder, after witnesses pointed him out.

An autopsy was performed on the victim Tuesday, but additional tests were required before the coroner could release the official cause of the man's death.

Everett Griggs of Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church said the victim had sought the church's help last month after he was assaulted.

Griggs said the church planned to buy him a bus ticket to join his daughter once his identity was confirmed and the daughter was located.
