The former treasurer of the Golden High School Quarterback Club was sentenced to 20 days in jail and three years probation for stealing money from the club with which she had been entrusted, officials said Tuesday.

Kelli Marie Hilborne stole more than $8,000 from the club between January and July 2007, said court spokeswoman Pam Russell.

The money in the account was all raised by students and their parents. Parents pay a significant fee for their kids to participate in sports each year. Parents and kids raise money by selling candy or coupon books and asking for pledges for other activities, Russell said.

Hilborne pleaded guilty to theft on June 23. She told the judge that she repaid $6,860 of the stolen money and planned to repay the remaining $1,231, Russell said.

Hilborne, who has a 17-year-old son, has since moved to the western slope and will be allowed to serve probation there.

Hilborne’s husband, William Edward Hilborne, 43, was also charged with theft and conspiracy to commit theft. He has a jury trial set for Sept. 30.
