A police and military escort will be leading a flatbed truck through Denver on Monday that will be carrying 230,000 pounds of twisted steel from the wreckage of the World Trade Center towers.
The 16 pieces of steel will be used to mark the attack on the World Trade Center 10 years ago on Sept. 11. The artifacts will be displayed at Denver's Counterterrorism Education Learning Lab (the CELL) in September and Babi Yar Park in the future.
On Monday morning, the steel which will be used for the memorials in 15 Colorado cities, made a procession from Buckley Air Force Base to Civic Center Park.
That's where Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock will outline Colorado's plans to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11th attacks. Those plans include a free concert with renowned musicians that will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, in Denvers Civic Center Park.
The public can see the steel at Civic Center Park at 10:15 a.m. and at Sloans Lake at 12:45 p.m.
The exact route of its procession on Monday, Aug. 8, is as follows:
Col. Dan Dant, 460th Space Wing and Installation Commander at Buckley Air Force Base, will lead a military ceremony paying tribute to the arrival of the World Trade Center steel. The steel, draped with an American flag, will be escorted by Buckley Air Force Base Honor Guard and Air Force personnel will be lined along the street at attention, saluting as the steel leaves the base.
