Woman Killed In Christmas Day Crash

Fort Collins Police Say Driver Ran Red Light, Triggering 4-Car Crash

A 32-year-old woman was killed on Christmas Day when a driver ran a red light, triggering a four-car crash, Fort Collins police said.

The chain-reaction wreck was reported about 4:11 p.m. at Shields Street and Horsetooth Road, police said.

Police said Dominick Russo, 60, of Loveland, was driving a 1994 Saturn west on Horsetooth Road when he failed to stop for a red light at Shields Street. A 2010 Mazda sedan traveling south on Shields Street broadsided the passenger side of the Saturn.

The Saturn spun southwest through the intersection and collided with two vehicles stopped in the eastbound lanes of Horsetooth Road, police said. Investigators said there was no evidence that either the Saturn or the Mazda braked before the collision.

Firefighters had to extricate the Saturn's front seat passenger, Christine Russo, 32, of Loveland, from the wrecked sedan, police said. She was transported to Medical Center of the Rockies where she later died from her injuries.

Dominick Russo was transported to Poudre Valley Hospital with serious injuries, police said. The driver of the Mazda, Chelsey Swim, 23, of Fort Collins, was transported to Poudre Valley Hospital with minor injuries. The occupants of the other two cars involved were not injured.

The intersection was closed about 3 ½ hours during the police investigation.

Police said they do not believe alcohol or excessive speed contributed to the collision. The investigation is continuing and charges are pending.

Anyone with information about the collision, who has not already given a statement to police, is asked to call Officer Drew Jurkofsky at 970-221-6555.
