Woman Dies After Being Shot In Head While Driving

Woman's Car Plows Into Garage At 12th, Clayton

A man suspected of shooting a female driver in the head has been arrested, Denver police said.

The woman died later Friday after she was rushed to the hospital, according to Denver police.

Ryan Miller, 27, was arrested around 1:45 p.m. His picture has not been released, pending a photo lineup.

Miller made his first appearance Saturday morning in Denver District Court. According to a court document, he was advised of a charge of first-degree murder and appointed a public defender. Since Miller will be charged with first-degree murder, he is being held at Denver Jail on no bond.

The 20-something woman was found shot in the head after police were called to a car accident at 7:24 a.m. Friday. A Pontiac G6 had plowed into the side wall of a detached garage at North Clayton Street and East 12th Avenue, in north Congress Park.

Investigators said the suspect and victim are acquaintances.

Denver police Lt. Matt Murray said that the victim was also an alleged victim of domestic violence in an incident with Miller earlier this month.

Murray said the autopsy will be completed by the Denver Medical Examiner on Monday.

Miller had been charged with six counts of kidnapping and one count of felony sexual assault for an incident that occurred on April 10, 2010. However, the charges were dismissed in November of this year because the victim did not want to pursue charges anymore and the prosecution could not proceed without her, said Krista Flanagan, spokeswoman for the Adams County District Attorney's Office.

Miller was arrested last week for misdemeanor assault and disturbing the peace.

He was also arrested on Sept. 24, for violating a restraining order, driving under the influence of alcohol and careless driving.

Victim Lived In Cimarron Apartments, Witnesses Say

A resident in the Greentree Apartments at 1235 Clayton Street told 7NEWS that he heard what sounded like a car backfiring or a gunshot and when he went to look, he saw a man running down Clayton Street with something in his hand.

Another witness said she saw a silver Audi fleeing the scene.

Police officers towed a silver Audi from a parking lot at 16th Avenue and Pennsylvania Street around 11 a.m. Miller lives about a block away, at 15th and Pennsylvania.

The detached garage is in an alley behind the Greentree Apartments.

Victim Was Commerce City Teacher

7News has confirmed the victim of the shooting is 27-year-old Andrea Roan a popular 5th grade teacher at Alsup Elementary in Commerce City.

An Adams County School District 14 official said Roan was a first year teacher at the school.

Friends said Roan had recently gotten a temporary restraining order against the suspect in her murder. They identified him as being her ex-boyfriend whom she broke up with around Thanksgiving.
