Colorado Springs police say a woman was charged with first-degree murder after a 1-year-old girl who had been hospitalized for a month died Friday.The suspect, Melissa Alexander, 27, was caring for the baby on Nov. 9 when emergency responders were called to an apartment complex, police said. They found the infant wasn't breathing.The baby was taken to a hospital in critical condition and was suffering from life-threatening, abusive injuries, police said.Alexander was arrested at the time and charged with felony child abuse, police said. Aside from saying that Alexander was caring for the child when she was injured, police did not describe the woman's relationship with the child.An autopsy was performed Saturday on the baby and her death was ruled a homicide, KRDO-TV reported.Following the autopsy results, Alexander's charge was raised from child abuse to first-degree murder, police said told the TV station.
