Wife Arrested In Husband's Slaying

Miriam Helmick's First Husband Died In Suicide

Mesa County sheriff's investigators announced the arrest of Miriam Helmick, 51, of Whitewater, Colo., in connection with the June 10 death of her husband, Alan.

Miriam was arrested Monday in Florida on a warrant charging her with first-degree murder after deliberation.

Alan Clarke Helmick, 62, was found shot to death on June 10, in the couple's 3,200-square-foot home, on their 40-acre ranch.

Miriam told investigators that her husband gave her a "wad" of cash and told her to "have fun like hell" in Grand Junction. She said they were supposed to meet for lunch, but he never showed.

She said she returned to the ranch and found his body, with a gunshot wound in the head. She then called 911 to report a possible robbery.

The two married in June 2006. Four years earlier Miriam Helmick's first husband, Jack Calloway Giles, died of a gunshot wound to the head while he was lying in bed with his wife.

The medical examiner's office ruled the death a suicide.

Miriam Helmick is being held on a $2 million bond warrant in Jacksonville, Florida, awaiting extradition.
